Best AI Writing Tools 2026

Six of the best AI writing tools for 2026 - ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Jasper, Grammarly, and Notion AI - compared by use case, features, and price.

Last updated Pricing verified

The best AI writing tool is the one that fits the writing you actually do. A consultant drafting proposals, a shop owner writing product pages, and a marketer running campaigns need different things. This roundup compares six widely used AI writing tools on the same criteria, so you can shortlist the right one or two and try them on your own work.

Quick picks

  • Best all-round assistant: ChatGPT, with the widest feature set and a low-cost entry plan.
  • Best for working from your own documents: Claude, with projects, research, and connectors to your work apps.
  • Best if you live in Google Workspace: Gemini, built into Gmail and, on higher plans, Docs.
  • Best for marketing teams: Jasper, with brand voice and audience controls.
  • Best for polishing your own writing: Grammarly, which works where you already type.
  • Best for Notion-based teams: Notion AI, if your docs and wiki already live there.

How we chose and compared these tools

This is a research-based roundup. We have not tested these tools hands-on for this article, so we do not give them scores. Instead, we compared every tool on the same six points, using each vendor’s official pricing and feature pages:

  1. Primary use: the kind of writing the tool is designed for.
  2. Where it works: a standalone app, inside other apps, or both.
  3. Context features: ways to give the tool your files, brand voice, or knowledge.
  4. Free option: whether you can try it without paying.
  5. Starting price: the lowest paid plan and how it is billed.
  6. Limitations: plan restrictions and trade-offs to weigh before buying.

We included tools that represent the main types of AI writing software: general assistants, a marketing platform, an editing assistant, and AI built into workspaces. For background on those types, see our guide to AI writing tools.

1. ChatGPT

Best for: people who want one assistant for drafting, rewriting, brainstorming, and research.

ChatGPT, from OpenAI, is a general-purpose AI assistant. You describe what you need in plain language and refine the result through conversation, which makes it useful for almost any writing task: emails, proposals, outlines, product descriptions, or turning messy notes into something readable.

Features to know. OpenAI’s help center lists GPTs, Projects, apps, company knowledge, ChatGPT agent, and deep research among the features included with ChatGPT Business seats. Business also adds a shared, centrally managed workspace for teams.

Pricing. ChatGPT has a free plan. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Go at $8 per month in the US and ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually, and needs at least two seats. Higher-priced Pro tiers are also available.

Limitations to weigh.

  • Usage limits and feature access differ by plan, so check what your chosen tier includes.
  • Business needs a minimum of two paid seats, which matters if you work entirely alone.
  • Like every assistant here, it can produce confident errors. Check facts, figures, and sources.

Not ideal for: anyone who mainly wants grammar and tone fixes inside the apps they already use. An editing assistant is more direct for that.

2. Claude

Best for: writing that starts from your own material, such as documents, notes, and research.

Claude, from Anthropic, is a general AI assistant with a similar chat-based approach to ChatGPT. It suits writing work where you bring the source material and want help turning it into a draft, summary, or revision.

Features to know. Anthropic’s pricing page lists web search, memory, file creation, connectors, and Google Workspace integration on the Free plan. Pro adds more usage, unlimited projects, Research, and a Microsoft 365 integration. Projects let you keep related files and instructions together, so you do not have to re-explain your business every time.

Pricing. Claude has a free plan. Pro costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month with annual billing ($200 billed up front). Max plans start at $100 per month for much higher usage. Team plans start at $25 per seat per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually.

Limitations to weigh.

  • The Free plan has lower usage limits. Regular heavy use points toward Pro or above.
  • Team features such as SSO, admin controls, and central billing require a Team plan.
  • Output still needs fact-checking, especially for figures and claims.

Not ideal for: teams that want marketing-specific tools such as campaign workflows and audience settings built in.

3. Gemini

Best for: small businesses already using Google Workspace for email and documents.

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant. For writing, its biggest advantage is location: it is built into Google Workspace, so you can get help drafting and summarizing in the apps where you already work.

Features to know. Google’s Workspace pricing page lists the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and chat in the Gemini app on Business Starter. Business Standard extends the Gemini assistant to Gmail, Docs, Meet, and more. Individuals can also use the Gemini app and Google’s consumer AI plans.

Pricing. On Google’s US Workspace pricing page, Business Starter was listed at $7 per user per month, Business Standard at $14, and Business Plus at $22, with a 10% introductory discount on Starter and Standard for the first year. Google’s consumer AI plan prices vary by country, so check the Gemini subscriptions page for your region.

Limitations to weigh.

  • Gemini in Docs requires Business Standard or above, not Starter.
  • It makes the most sense if your business already runs on Google Workspace.
  • As with any assistant, review drafts before you send or publish them.

Not ideal for: people who write mainly outside Google’s apps and want a standalone assistant.

4. Jasper

Best for: marketing teams and businesses producing a steady volume of on-brand content.

Jasper is an AI platform built specifically for marketing. Where general assistants are blank slates, Jasper is organized around brand consistency and marketing workflows.

Features to know. Jasper’s Pro plan lists its Canvas workspace for content creation, agents for core marketing workflows, 2 Brand Voices, 5 Knowledge assets, 3 Audiences, image generation and editing, a plagiarism checker, chat, a browser extension, and support for 30+ languages. The custom-priced Business plan adds a no-code builder for custom AI agents, Jasper Grid for content at scale, API access, and admin and SSO controls.

Pricing. Jasper Pro costs $69 per seat per month billed monthly, or $59 per seat per month billed annually, with a 7-day free trial. Business pricing is custom, with a 12-month minimum commitment.

Limitations to weigh.

  • There is no free plan, only a trial.
  • It costs noticeably more than the general assistants’ entry plans.
  • Brand Voices, Knowledge assets, and Audiences are capped on Pro, with unlimited amounts on Business.

Not ideal for: solo users with occasional writing needs, who will pay for marketing features they may not use. Our Jasper vs Claude vs ChatGPT comparison looks at when Jasper is worth the premium.

5. Grammarly

Best for: improving writing you produce yourself, wherever you type.

Grammarly started as a grammar checker and now includes generative AI. Its strength is editing: making your own writing clearer, more correct, and better suited in tone to the reader.

Features to know. The Free plan covers spelling and grammar corrections, tone detection, and 100 AI prompts per month. Pro adds full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustments, plagiarism and AI-generated text detection, 2,000 AI prompts per member per month, a style guide and brand tone, and snippets.

Pricing. Grammarly lists a free plan and Pro at $12 per month, with a free trial. Enterprise pricing is custom.

Limitations to weigh.

  • It is built for polishing and rewriting more than producing long first drafts.
  • The Free plan’s AI prompt allowance is small for daily generative use.

Not ideal for: people who need an assistant to research and write long pieces from scratch. Pair it with a general assistant instead.

6. Notion AI

Best for: people and teams whose notes, documents, and wiki already live in Notion.

Notion is a workspace for documents, databases, and wikis. Notion AI brings writing and summarizing into those pages, so you can draft, rewrite, translate, and pull answers from your existing workspace.

Features to know. Notion’s pricing page lists full access to Notion Agent (chat, generate, autofill, and translate), AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search (in beta) on the Business plan. Free and Plus plans get a limited trial of these AI features.

Pricing. Notion lists Plus at $10 per member per month and Business at $20 per member per month, with up to 20% savings on annual billing. Full Notion AI features are on Business. Custom Agents are priced separately using Notion credits.

Limitations to weigh.

  • Full AI access starts at the Business plan, not Plus.
  • It is only worth it if Notion is already central to how you work.

Not ideal for: anyone who does most of their writing in email or other document tools.

How to choose

Answer these questions in order and your shortlist usually picks itself:

  1. Where do you already work? If the answer is Google Workspace or Notion, start with the AI built into it before adding another subscription.
  2. Are you mostly writing new content or improving your own? New drafts point to ChatGPT or Claude. Polishing points to Grammarly.
  3. Is brand consistency across a lot of marketing content the main goal? That is the case where Jasper’s premium is easiest to justify.
  4. Do you work alone or with a team? Check seat minimums and team features before comparing prices.
  5. What is your monthly budget? Compare the full plan you would need, not just the entry price.

Then try your top two on the same three to five real tasks before paying for a year. Our AI writing tools guide explains a simple way to run that comparison.

Get better results from any of them

  • Give context up front. Say who the reader is, what you want them to do, and what to avoid.
  • Share an example. Paste a past email or post you like and ask for the same style.
  • Ask for options. Three short versions are easier to judge than one long one.
  • Edit in passes. Fix facts first, then structure, then tone.
  • Keep a prompt library. Save the instructions that work in your own documents so you can reuse them in any tool.

If writing is only one part of your workload, our list of the best AI tools for small business covers tools for meetings, scheduling, bookkeeping, and support.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the best AI writing tool overall?

There is no single best tool for everyone. ChatGPT and Claude are the most flexible general assistants for drafting and rewriting. Gemini fits people who work in Google Workspace, Jasper is built for marketing teams, Grammarly focuses on editing, and Notion AI suits people whose documents live in Notion.

  • Which AI writing tools have a free plan?

ChatGPT, Claude, and Grammarly all list a free plan, and Notion's Free plan includes a limited trial of Notion AI. Jasper offers a 7-day free trial rather than a free plan. Free plans have lower usage limits, so check the current limits on each vendor's site.

  • How much do AI writing tools cost?

When we checked official pricing pages on 14 September 2026, paid plans started at $8 per month for ChatGPT Go in the US, $12 for Grammarly Pro, $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro billed monthly, and $69 per seat per month for Jasper Pro billed monthly. Prices vary by country and billing period.

  • Did you test these AI writing tools?

No. This roundup is research-based. It uses the vendors' official feature and pricing pages, which is why it has no scores. We compare the tools on the same criteria and recommend trying your own tasks on a free plan or trial before you pay.

  • Is Jasper better than ChatGPT for marketing?

Jasper includes marketing-specific features such as Brand Voices, Knowledge assets, Audiences, and marketing agents, which suit teams producing a lot of on-brand content. ChatGPT is broader and cheaper to start with. Our Jasper vs Claude vs ChatGPT comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.
